“Advancing Innovativeness through Data Mining”

Strategic-level decisions have significant influence on the competitiveness and success of companies. There is a tremendous need for decision support systems (DSS) that can be utilized by senior-level managers, for guiding their strategic level decisions based on data and knowledge. However, Operations Research and Management Science (OR/MS) literatures have mostly focused on operational-level decision making problems. Strategic-level problems have not received adequate attention in the academic literature due to their inherent vagueness, as well as difficulties in their mathematical formulation. Data Mining might offer solutions to address this gap in the literature.
In the first part of this talk, a web-enabled decision support system (DSS) software will be introduced for enhancing firm-level innovativeness. The DSS utilizes data gathered in an empirical survey from 184 manufacturing companies located in a large industrial region of Turkey. By using various data mining techniques such as feature selection, feature weighting and fuzzy inference, the developed DSS generates a strategy report for the senior-level decision makers. The report suggests to the decision makers a prioritized short list of innovation determinants that deserve focus, in order to advance firm-level innovativeness.
In the second part of the talk, the focus will be on another data mining technique, namely clustering, and how clustering can be used in gaining deeper insights from a survey on innovativeness. As opposed to the more traditional statistical techniques, a taxonomy (classification) based on multidimensional clustering was observed to reveal immense amount of new actionable knowledge. In this part of the talk, the the application of the aforementioned analysis technique will be shown for investigating the relations among innovativeness, operations priorities and firm performance.
