A group of 10 students in total, among them three students from the main RIT campus in New York, are learning about Islamic Finance for the first time in RIT Dubai.

Dr. Mejda Bahlous-Boldi an associate professor of Finance explains that the Islamic banking and Finance industry has witnessed double digit growth since the financial crisis and is now considered a viable alternative to conventional finance even in western countries. With the Islamic finance industry becoming a global industry, universities and colleges need to work on providing the human capital and product innovation needed to sustain the growth of the Islamic Banking and Finance Industry.
Islamic Banking deemed as interest free banking based on profit and loss sharing principles, promotes a more equitable, just and fair economic system that aims to benefit the society as a whole.

According to a recent report of The Banker 2015 “the Islamic finance industry’s strong, if not stellar, growth continued. The global industry’s compound annual asset growth (CAGR) between 2007 and the end of 2014 sits at an impressive 12.68%. This performance has largely been driven by the dominant markets of the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) and Malaysia. For its part, the GCC registered a CAGR of 17.49% over this period, while in Asia this number hit 10.55%, followed by sub-Saharan Africa coming in at 10.46%.”

RIT Dubai Seminar

Dr. Kemal Kılıç – Sabancı University

February 18, 2016, Thursday
@ 11am @ Conference Center
RIT Dubai University – Dubai Silicon Oasis

“Advancing Innovativeness through Data Mining”

Strategic-level decisions have significant influence on the competitiveness and success of companies. There is a tremendous need for decision support systems (DSS) that can be utilized by senior-level managers, for guiding their strategic level decisions based on data and knowledge. However, Operations Research and Management Science (OR/MS) literatures have mostly focused on operational-level decision making problems. Strategic-level problems have not received adequate attention in the academic literature due to their inherent vagueness, as well as difficulties in their mathematical formulation. Data Mining might offer solutions to address this gap in the literature.
In the first part of this talk, a web-enabled decision support system (DSS) software will be introduced for enhancing firm-level innovativeness. The DSS utilizes data gathered in an empirical survey from 184 manufacturing companies located in a large industrial region of Turkey. By using various data mining techniques such as feature selection, feature weighting and fuzzy inference, the developed DSS generates a strategy report for the senior-level decision makers. The report suggests to the decision makers a prioritized short list of innovation determinants that deserve focus, in order to advance firm-level innovativeness.
In the second part of the talk, the focus will be on another data mining technique, namely clustering, and how clustering can be used in gaining deeper insights from a survey on innovativeness. As opposed to the more traditional statistical techniques, a taxonomy (classification) based on multidimensional clustering was observed to reveal immense amount of new actionable knowledge. In this part of the talk, the the application of the aforementioned analysis technique will be shown for investigating the relations among innovativeness, operations priorities and firm performance.

The Rochester Institute of Technology, Dubai campus, (RIT Dubai) signed a Technical Agreement with the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), launching a new strategic partnership between the two institutions. As part of the university’s Outreach program, the partnership aims to foster collaboration opportunities in various fields, such as project development and cooperative education between RIT students and faculty, and UN WFP.

Pierre Honnorat, WFP/UNHRD Network Coordinator at WFP Headquarters in Rome, Italy commented on the new alliance between RIT Dubai and WFP: “Partnership with universities is essential because it joins academic enthusiasm with practitioners and stimulates the development and effectiveness of our humanitarian activities”

The partnership has begun with a collaboration with the UN Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD) Network, working on improving its performance monitoring, reporting and information management to best serve its Partners. RIT faculty and computing students will work on this project for six months.

Dr. Yousef Al Assaf, President of RIT Dubai commented: "We are excited about this partnership as it allows our faculty and experts to share their experiences with WFP and support their humanitarian activities. It will also give our students the opportunity to engage in current industry projects and work on the implementation of new solutions."

RIT Dubai’s Outreach program is a strategic initiative to promote collaboration between the university and industry partners and institutions from across the United Arab Emirates. The Outreach program spans various fields of collaboration, such as research, cooperative education and career placement, specialized training, tuition discounts and project development.

RIT Dubai celebrates ”One Spirit” Festival with Rochester, Dubrovnik, Kosovo and Zagreb!

RIT’s communities in Dubai, Rochester Dubrovnik, Kosovo and Zagreb united for simultaneous celebrations of culture on Saturday, Feb. 20, collectively known as One SpiRIT: Global Unification. During One SpiRIT, attendees were able to interact with others across the world and see performances from each of the five campuses during a friendly global competition.

Here in Dubai the festivities took place on the RIT Dubai Tennis court where we set up a traditional American Fun Fair for students. Student were treated with live performances, food & games. The event was attended by more then 300 students, faculty and staff and was certainly one of the biggest student events

The first One SpiRIT event in 2014 highlighted Rochester’s favorite campus pastime, hockey, but now the emphasis will be on each campus and what makes us great.

OnespiRIT

“The impetus was that RIT’s presence, in name and in pride, is much more global now and we want students to know they’re a part of something larger,” says Dr. Karey Pine, Senior Director of the Center for Campus Life and one of the festival’s organizers at Rochester. One student group from each campus has been selected to perform in the global talent show, representing their campus culture for all to see. The performances are composed entirely by students, who will sing, dance or some of both. Pine says, “Some have done entire music videos to celebrate their culture and their pride as an RIT student.” RIT Dubai’s entry was a mix of songs in different languages to represent our cultural diversity here in the UAE. Using Cisco technology, all five RIT campuses interacted in real-time.

One SpiRIT is all about culture and a little bit of competition this time around. While Zagreb’s great performance was chosen as the winning entry this year, RIT Dubai is ready for another competition next year.

All staff and student organizers have put a great deal of effort into not only planning this event, but securing our connections with the other campuses through technology.
