The Rochester Institute of Technology, Dubai campus, (RIT Dubai) a leading American University that is based in Dubai Silicon Oasis, opened its annual Career Day, on Sunday, March 20, 2016. The event, which was organized by the university’s Outreach & Cooperative Education Office, brought together more than 20 companies and organizations, including international as well as local partners.

The theme of the Career Day was “Experiential Learning”, and for the first time RIT Dubai introduced the “Student Bootcamp” for students going on their first cooperative education this summer. During the “bootcamp” students engaged in round table discussions on topics pertaining workplace skills. Industry partners facilitated the discussions and coached the students through case studies on workplace life.  A panel discussion followed during the second part of the activity, where students had the opportunity of an open Q&A session with the panelists giving advice on careers and job search. The “Student Bootcamp” brought together professionals from various industries, such as airlines, energy, logistics and consulting. The activity was highly regarded by both students and facilitators.

Dr. Yousef Al Assaf, President of RIT Dubai, addressed the students and facilitators during the “Bootcamp”, encouraging the students to take advantage of the life opportunities coming their way now that they enter employment. “You are the ambassadors of RIT in the industry and our partners. Your good example sets the way for the next generations of RIT students” said President Al-Assaf, during his speech.

With a new concept this year, the Career Day was a full day event, combining the Career Fair with the Alumni Gathering, giving employers the opportunity to meet interns, fresh graduates as well as experienced professionals. RIT Alumni from NY and Croatia RIT campuses attended.

His Excellency Sheikh Khalid bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the RIT Dubai Board of Directors visited the Career Fair and was updated on RIT Dubai’s new partnerships and ongoing projects with the industry. H.E. later addressed the Alumni and Corporate Partners Gathering and Dinner, where he highlighted the importance of industry and academics integration and expressed his trust to RIT Dubai’s growth and continuation of strong partnerships in the years to come.

Tony Ghanime, senior student in Management major said, "RIT Dubai’s career fair gave me the opportunity to get some valuable face to face time with professionals from some of the top companies in their industries. I'm grateful to my university for giving my peers and me that sought after edge to succeed in the competitive working environment."

Hazel Gamboa senior student in Electrical Engineering said: “The Career Fair was a great event! I got the opportunity to introduce myself to several companies and get to know what they are looking for. As a graduating student, I think it was a really helpful event”

Participating companies and organizations included, GE, Emerson, United Technologies, McKinsey & Co, UN WFP, GECO, EY, SAP, IHG, QIS, Novo Nordisk, Fujitsu and many others.

RIT Students Promote Sustainability and Win Future Generation Prize

The mechanical engineering faculty at RIT Dubai University encourages students to participate in various competitions as one of the tools utilized to teach students innovation and encourage them to excel in their work, think out of the box and look for solution to emerging engineering and environmental problems. Over the last three years, Mechanical engineering students won many prizes in this field.

This year, RIT Dubai students participated in the Future Generation Competition held on March 1-3, 2016 in Dubai Trade Center. Three projects were presented by the students spanning the field of renewable energy. The projects were proposed, designed, fabricated and tested by the students. The below is one of the presented projects.

HYDRO ELECTRIC WASTE WATER TURBINE

In this project, we attempted to harvest energy from waste water in the drainage system of high rise buildings. In any high rise building, a particular amount of initial energy (varying from building to building) is used to raise water to high levels and the same water is allowed to flow down under gravity with absolutely no energy recovery. Our prototype turbine is expected to recover 25-30% of this energy and re-direct it to an inverter for power storage or consumption. We wanted to tackle this issue, in the UAE in particular, as we have an abundance of high rise buildings and our prototype fabrication cost is expected to be relatively low which makes it a highly cost efficient and desirable investment for this region.

The project won the runner up prize during the Future Generation Competition-2016, one of the Middle East Electricity Conference Awards.

RIT’s communities in Dubai, Rochester Dubrovnik, Kosovo and Zagreb united for simultaneous celebrations of culture on Saturday, Feb. 20, collectively known as One SpiRIT: Global Unification. During One SpiRIT, attendees were able to interact with others across the world and see performances from each of the five campuses during a friendly global competition.

Here in Dubai the festivities took place on the RIT Dubai Tennis court where we set up a traditional American Fun Fair for students. Student were treated with live performances, food & games. The event was attended by more then 300 students, faculty and staff and was certainly one of the biggest student events

The first One SpiRIT event in 2014 highlighted Rochester’s favorite campus pastime, hockey, but now the emphasis will be on each campus and what makes us great.

OnespiRIT

“The impetus was that RIT’s presence, in name and in pride, is much more global now and we want students to know they’re a part of something larger,” says Dr. Karey Pine, Senior Director of the Center for Campus Life and one of the festival’s organizers at Rochester. One student group from each campus has been selected to perform in the global talent show, representing their campus culture for all to see. The performances are composed entirely by students, who will sing, dance or some of both. Pine says, “Some have done entire music videos to celebrate their culture and their pride as an RIT student.” RIT Dubai’s entry was a mix of songs in different languages to represent our cultural diversity here in the UAE. Using Cisco technology, all five RIT campuses interacted in real-time.

One SpiRIT is all about culture and a little bit of competition this time around. While Zagreb’s great performance was chosen as the winning entry this year, RIT Dubai is ready for another competition next year.

All staff and student organizers have put a great deal of effort into not only planning this event, but securing our connections with the other campuses through technology.
